What your Child needs at School

What will my child need to bring to school?

Lunch / Recess

At Appin Public School, lunch is the first break at 10:50am to 11:30pm. Afternoon recess is 1:30pm to 2:00pm.The children will need to have something to eat and drink each day for both lunch and recess. Your child will be learning about healthy foods at school and we ask for your support in reinforcing this message by keeping snacks and other foods high in sugar, fat or salt to a minimum.

Please provide opportunities for your child to practise:

  • identifying their bag, lunch box and drink bottle
  • identifying which of their food is "lunch" and which food is "recess"
  • opening their lunch box, drink bottle and snacks
  • unwrapping their sandwiches or opening other containers

Lunch boxes and drink bottles are preferred as their contents can be resealed and finished at the next break. We will encourage your child to take home leftover food rather than waste it by throwing it in the bin. Please label all items, including the top and bottom of the lunch box clearly with their name. Glass bottles and cans are not to be brought to school. We encourage a waste free lunch where you may pack your child's sandwich and snacks in a container rather than using cling wrap and packaging.

Canteen

Lunch orders may be placed at the canteen each morning from 8:30 - 9:00 am.  The canteen is run by a contractor called 'Alli's Lunch Box'. Menu items are colour coded to assist students and their families make healthier choices. For the first few weeks of Kindergarten, it is advisable to have the children bring their lunch from home.  The children can be introduced to ordering lunch from the canteen when they have settled into school.

Crunch and Sip Break

Students are encouraged to bring along some fresh fruit or raw vegetables (such as carrots, celery etc) and a bottle of water that they can ‘crunch and sip' on while they are working in the classroom each morning. It is hoped that this initiative will encourage students to consume more fresh fruit, an important step in helping to build healthy eating habits.

NO HAT, NO PLAY

Students are asked to wear a school hat when they are outdoors (winter and summer) to minimise the risk of skin cancer.  School hats are available from the Appin Uniform Committee.

Library

All pupils are encouraged to borrow books from the Library. Children return and borrow with a trained teacher/librarian on a weekly basis and may visit the library during lunch time on designated days.  Kindergarten children may borrow a book each week if they bring a library bag. Parents are asked to pay the replacement cost of damaged or lost books. Parents are asked to assist in maintaining school library books by:

  • Ensuring their child has a library bag (pillow case or school library bag) clearly labelled with the child's name.
  • Keeping the library bag in the same safe place at home, out of reach of younger children and where it can easily found for your child's library day.

What not to bring to school?

Valuables and Toys

We ask parents to avoid sending toys and other personal items to school as they may become lost or broken. Toys, including electronic games and collectables, should not be brought to school unless requested by the teacher for specific lessons.

Mobile Phones, iPods and/or Cameras

If it is necessary to bring a mobile phone, iPod or camera to school, it must be dropped off at the office in the morning and collected at the end of the school day.
