Getting to and from school safely
As a parent or carer, it’s your responsibility to get your child to and from school safely. Student safety is our priority.
Keep our school community safe by:
- driving and parking safely, even if it means parking further away and walking the rest of the way to school
- being a good role model
- never calling your child from across the road
- using the safest place to cross the road.
For parents and carers of younger children
Discuss with your child how to be safe when:
- walking
- in the car
- waiting for, travelling on, and getting off the bus
- riding bikes, scooters and skateboards.
Also talk about and practise:
- safe travel routes
- plans for when unexpected things happen
- what to do in wet weather.
Dropping off in the morning
Please do not linger too long in the mornings after dropping off your child, as it makes it much harder for all concerned. After the first week, parents should leave when their child/ren are safely delivered to school. Please teach your child to walk into the playground without you. If your child is having difficulty separating from you, let a staff member know and they will assist you. Any tears are usually short lived and we will always contact parents if a child remains distressed.
Picking up in the afternoon
Please make sure your child knows where they will meet you in the afternoon. If you want to pick your child up from the classroom, please wait in the sheltered area near the Kindergarten rooms. We ask that parents do not wait near the classroom door or windows, as it makes it difficult for the teacher to keep the attention of all students if they are waving to parents waiting outside. An alternative is to meet your child at a predetermined point, such as one of the exit gates. Please do not wait for your child on the opposite side of the road, as children sometimes forget to check for cars when they see you waiting.
Bus service
Children wishing to travel to school by bus, or home by bus, may apply for a bus pass. Bus Pass application forms are available at the Office for all Infants children. Primary children are required to live more than 1.6km from the school to be eligible for a bus pass. The bus collects students at 3:25 pm from the bus stop outside the school.
Bikes and scooters
Children must walk their bikes and scooters into and out of the school grounds along the paths, and they are not to be ridden in the school grounds at any time. Parents are asked to be very sure that their child has a thorough knowledge of road rules and is capable of riding responsibly on a public road. Infants children are discouraged from riding bikes, though the final decision is that of the parent. Helmets are compulsory (NSW law).
Parking
The School Car Park is only for Staff and deliveries. Parents should not park or drop off in the school grounds. There is limited parking along Appin Road (note parking restrictions) and in Elizabeth Close. Please do not use the staff car park to drop off or pick up children. For safety reasons it is only for staff use and we ask that you use pathways and do not walk through the car park. Please note the ‘No Standing' signs erected on Appin Road.
Subsidised school travel
Transport for NSW provides subsidies to assist school students.
- The School Student Transport Scheme provides eligible students with free or subsidised travel on public transport between home and school.
- The School Drive Subsidy may help towards the costs of driving children to school if you live in an area where there is no public transport.
