High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At Appin Public School, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPG education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Appin Public School, High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is an integral part of our everyday teaching practice. We recognise that many of our students demonstrate high potential, and we are committed to nurturing that potential to help each learner thrive.

  • Our teachers carefully identify students’ individual learning needs within the classroom and implement evidence-based teaching strategies designed to challenge and extend their capabilities. We offer a range of learning pathways, including enrichment programs, extension activities, and opportunities for acceleration.
  • We foster supportive and inclusive classroom environments that promote a strong sense of belonging, encouraging students to take risks, engage creatively, and collaborate effectively with their peers.
  • Our approach is flexible and student-centred: groups are adaptable, students are encouraged to take leadership roles, and feedback is strengths-based, with clear goals and opportunities for self-reflection.
  • To ensure we meet the diverse needs of all learners, including our high potential and gifted students, our teachers participate in ongoing professional learning and development.
Across our school

At Appin Public School, we recognise that every student is unique, and we offer flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and develop their strengths beyond the classroom.

  • All our students, including those who are high potential and gifted, are encouraged to take on leadership roles through our student leadership programs, mentoring initiatives, peer coaching, and by leading major school events such as ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, and NAIDOC assemblies.
  • We provide targeted support and enrichment through dedicated workshops and well-equipped learning spaces that foster confidence and sustained effort.
  • Our students have extensive opportunities to engage with STEM pathways, including participation in robotics clubs, coding challenges, and hands-on activities that connect with industry partners and local organisations.
  • Students with a passion for humanities deepen their understanding through special programs and partnerships that link them with experts in the field.
  • Creative talents are nurtured and celebrated through music ensembles, drama productions, visual arts programs, and opportunities to contribute to school events such as Southern Stars.
  • We also offer programs such as debating competitions and creative writing challenges that help students develop their communication skills and critical thinking.
Across NSW

At Appin Public School, our students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of state-wide programs designed to extend and enrich their potential.

  • We actively encourage participation in diverse sporting competitions, including gala days, combined school knockout events, and pathways to zone, regional, and state carnivals.
  • Our students also engage in academic competitions such as ICAS assessments in English, Mathematics, and Science, as well as writing and NSW Geography and History competitions.
  • The Premier’s Sporting Challenge fosters whole-school involvement in physical activity, offering leadership opportunities and promoting collaborative learning. Through reflection and sharing, students build knowledge and character, contributing to their personal growth and the strength of our school community.
